Lakota Way Free Essays

English 100-13 21 October 2009 Family Virtues are generally educated through the eyes of the savvy, otherwise called the senior. In the book The Lakota Way, by Joseph M. Marshall III, his clan trains temperances however narrating. We will compose a custom paper test on Lakota Way or on the other hand any comparative theme just for you Request Now The temperances of the Lakota clan and those of my family are increasingly comparable then I had foreseen, despite the fact that we do have our disparities. The Lakota Way, stories and exercises for living, is a book written in 2001 by Joseph M. Marshall III. Marshall commits his book to Kimberly Jo Schumidt and Joseph N. Marshall II. The tales he tells all through his book are those that have been passed down from his family about the Lakota’s and their excellencies. Marshall’s stories depend on ethics and temperances. While perusing part 3, â€Å"Respect,† of The LakotaWay I came to discover a few likenesses between my family’s see and the Lakota’s see. Koskalaka is a youngster, in this section, who goes out chasing in the forested areas and unearths the Deer Woman whom his grandma had delineated for him. His grandma had referenced that she knew a man who was never home in light of the fact that the Deer Woman took him, so he ought to keep away from her however much as could be expected. The Lakotas are attempting to instruct regard to youthful Koskalaka. They are giving him that you should regard your family and everyone around you since one day you can lose everything. Like the Lakotas, my family has been shown regard through are ages. My family has instructed us that family starts things out and we should regard one another and ourselves. They have said that in the event that we don't regard ourselves, at that point nor are we regarding our family name. I asked my mother what regard was the point at which I was more youthful and she said,â€Å"respect isn't something to simply mess with, you ought to consistently give individuals the regard they merit and treat individuals the way that you might want to be dealt with. You shouldn’t slight individuals and consistently remember how you would feel if somebody somehow happened to affront me how you are disregarding them. † I acknowledged her words and took in an important exercise that day, to such an extent that now when I see somebody disregarding another I want to intercede. In The Lakota Way, Koskalaka meets the deer lady and recalls what his grandma had let him know and out of regard he decays her enticing proposal to go with her. Much the same as Koskalaka regards his senior grandma my kin likewise have discovered that we should regard individuals and more the senior. In the Lakota clan, the grandma said that when the Deer Woman brings them into her hotel she engages in sexual relations with them be that as it may, when they wake the deer lady is no longer there leaving the man absent minded of his family and looking for the Deer Woman. In contrast to the Lakotas, my family has gone out and seen their own kind of deer lady wether it be with medications, sex, or lies, yet never have they disregarded all of us. My family has figured out how to grasp each other when they have fallen into allurement, where the Lakotas would cast them out. My family members have experienced numerous hardships and troublesome circumstances yet the ethics have set into our heads like Koskalaka’s grandma set into his head. The numerous men whom the Deer Woman attracted into her cabin lost total contact with their families and in this manner themselves. They left their family’s stressed over where they could be and what could be transpiring. The men got narrow minded and impolite, andâ no longer demonstrating the regard and consideration that they ought to have been appearing to their family in view of the Deer Woman. Not at all like the men and lady of The Lakota Way, our ethics have been entangled into our psyches that family should consistently start things out, paying little mind to the over hard and fast come in any circumstance. The Lakota’s excellencies exhibit ideals through narrating restricted to my family who shows ethics through genuine model. They reveal to us accounts of hardships one of our family members have experienced and what we need to do to keep away from circumstances like that. The narratives of regard in The Lakota Way are like those of my family’s. The Lakota’s are very ideals individuals who esteem their family and regard themselves simply like the group of my own. Why Is Procrastination Dangerous - Free Essay Example

Procrastination You may delay, but time will not, said Benjamin Franklin, a famous founding father. Personally confirming this myself as writing this paper the day before it is due procrastination exists within many of us, and itrs a very real issue. As you procrastinate, you do not only delay your tasks , but as well lengthen your worries. Procrastination is a serious problem, and it is defined as the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. Furthermore, procrastination could be stated as a habitual and intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite its negative consequences. Coming from the perspective of a college student under the pressures of finals, as deadlines approach, students say they find themselves using their time for anything but homework. In fact, According to the American Psychological Association, between 80 and 95 percent of college students procrastinate on their schoolwork(Karr). Across the United States, students and the working class alike need to recognize that procrastination is a harmful issue and can pose irreversible damage, such as mental disorders, destruction of well-being, and eventually death moreover, to those five to twenty percent who have managed to escape this chaos, I salute you. A personrs mental health is directly impacted by procrastination, a serious issue within our society. Generally speaking, getting on the grind may be simple to some folks where all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other to get tasks at hand done, however it never is that easy. There is a real link between procrastination thinking styles and mild to serious depression in many people. More so a chicken and egg scenario(OKeefe). Although it may bring some temporary relief, we eventually wake up the following day and find that our work is still waiting to be completed. The body has become overloaded with stress through an event, causing the adrenal glands to overload then slow down(OKeefe). All you seem to feel? Hopelessness, helplessness and a lack of energy that result in difficulty starting or finishing a task. This often leads to episodes of depression, where even getting out of bed can seem like the worldrs hardest task you want to be productive, but you cant. Not to make yourself feel better, not for a million dollars. When experiencing this, using energy to give yourself a motivational speech seems like a complete waste. For some people the act of procrastination causes depression as a personality trait, and for others biological depression causes procrastination as a feature of their illness. Depression is not the only mental illness associated with procrastinating, as it is also associated with many disorders like anxiety, ADHD, and OCD. With attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, certain traits such as impulsivity and being easily distracted and poorly organized that all contribute to procrastination seem to cluster together, Steel says. Separately, obsessi ve-compulsive disorder can also cause a person to procrastinate. If youre washing your hands again and again or tied up with other compulsions, thatrs going to keep you from something else you know you need to do, Steel says. He says that a closer examination reveals many who are anxious dont procrastinate, though some do, and that another factor is usually at play: impulsiveness. So when youre an impulsive person, and youre anxious, you tend to [use] emotional coping techniques, he says. Instead of dealing with the problem you try and drown out your awareness of a problem. You might instead turn on the TV, go party or do other things or rationalize in ways that make you feel better about not doing what youre putting off, he says.Though procrastination is not listed among mental health disorders included in the American Psychiatric Associationrs Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or the DSM-5, experts who study it say it can be a consuming problem. And solving the problem isnt so simple as it might seem: When people tell procra stinators, ?You should just do it now, itrs pretty much the same as when they tell people who are depressed, ?Be happy, Steel says. Itrs ineffective, and actually kind of more than annoying. Itrs almost disrespectful of the seriousness of the underlying condition(Schroeder). Procrastination is a problem throughout the United States bringing about damaging impacts, such as ruining a personrs well-being and overall happiness. Whatrs more, ignoring the problem of chronic procrastination itself and whatrs causing it can have a significant impact, from affecting job or school performance to straining relationships (like when expectations arent met) to diminishing quality of life for the individual. Procrastination becomes a serious problem when it affects all aspects of a personrs life, says Robert Schachter, a psychologist and an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. When facing this issue on a daily basis, it will begin to take its toll on your life and eventually tear you down. You will find yourself wasting precious time, blowing opportunities, and ruining your career. The worst thing about procrastinating is the moment you realize that you are two, five or ten years older and nothing has changed. Where did all the time go? This is a terrible feeling because you cant turn back the hands of time, you just have to live with the helpless feeling of regret. There is nothing worse than feeling frustrated at yourself, knowing the situation could have been so different if only you had taken that first step! Dont do that to yourself, you deserve what you desire. Additionally, What some dont realize is that the opportunity could have been life changing but they missed out on it. Most opportunities only come around once; no one is ever guaranteed a second chance. To elaborate, the way you work directly affects your results, how much you achieve and how well you perform. Perhaps procrastination prevents you from meeting deadlines or achieving your monthly targets. You might miss out on promotions or worse; you might even be at risk of losing your job. You can try to hide it for a while, but dont doubt that long-term procrastination at work will almost certainly ruin your career(ODonovan). It will catch up to you. Another major effect of procrastination is death, after ignoring and putting off important and crucial events. For example, procrastination is linked to cardiovascular disease, of which can certainly be fatal. Sirois, psychological scientist Fuschia Sirois of Bishoprs University in Quebec, hypothesized that procrastinators are likely to put off important health behaviors like going to the doctor and getting regular exercise. She also suspected that chronic procrastinators might cope poorly with the constant stress caused by delay. For the study, Sirois recruited a community sample of 182 individuals self-reporting a formal medical diagnosis of either hypertension or cardiovascular disease and a group of 564 healthy controls. All of the participants completed a series of online surveys measuring trait procrastination, coping style, stress, and health outcomes. The survey results showed that the group that had been diagnosed with either hypertension or cardiovascular disease scored significantly higher on measures for trait procrastination compared to the healthy controls. In addition, the HT/CVD group showed a stronger association between procrastination and the two maladaptive coping strategies (behavioral disengagement and self-blame) compared to the healthy control group. As well, procrastination can be a factor in identifying a disease like cancer, though not an obvious direct cause. You can die from it of course, Steel says. It can be something like finding a lump in your breast and then not treating it. Unnecessarily delaying medical tests or treatment a common concern can certainly put a person in harmrs way(APS). Although procrastination can cause life-debilitating changes, a person may reduce these impacts through proper education. The first step of course, is to recognize youre procrastinating. You might be waiting until a good time or to be in a right mood to start your tasks, filling your time with unimportant tasks, or even leaving an item on a To-Do list for a long amount of time. Second, work out why youre procrastinating. Poor organization can lead to procrastination, feelings of being overwhelmed, or fearing failure. You can people successfully overcome procrastination by creating schedules and allowing for a certain amount of time for each task that needs completion. Also, try to seek work that you know youre capable of completing, and try your best. All you can do is that, aim to perform to the best of your abilities. The next step is to adopt anti-procrastination strategies. If this means fully committing to the task and promising yourself a reward upon completion and it works for you, do so(Mindtools). Other tips to ty is to break bigger and more challenging assignments into smaller parts, and take one step at a time. You can also minimize distractions, and if this means turning off your phone, the television, or your laptop and sitting in a quiet place like a local library, it is much encouraged. Through proper education and major routine change, procrastination can be reduced. Procrastination is an extremely dangerous issue across the nation among people of all ages and causes mental disorders, destruction of your well being, and death. Works Cited. Interview Process My main goal during the interview was to identify the roles and responsibilities of the talent advisor and the qualifications and skills required for the position. I was also looking forward to getting more information on what it takes to become a human resource generalist. The interview process with Mrs. Renee Stovall was formal and businesslike since I was meeting her for the first time. We established an opening that consisted of a two-step process with me sharing that I would be asking a series of question and that she could provide me with any information that she would like to share. This assisted me in gaining her attention, and she gladly accepted, so we were able to establish a trust rapport. As the interview process progressed, we became more relaxed, which changed the atmosphere of the interview and there were more verbal and nonverbal information being shared. The interview lasted for approximately fifty minutes and thus, I had to be well organized to be able to get the i nformation that I needed

Miller dramatic Essay Example For Students

Miller dramatic Essay Examine the end of act one in The Crucible. Consider its importance of this scene to the rest of the play and analyse how Miller makes it dramatic. The Crucible was written in 1952 by the twentieth century American playwright Arthur Miller (1915-. ) Miller was born in New York and educated at the University of Michigan where he began to write plays. Most of Millers plays are set in contemporary America and on the whole offer a realistic portrayal of life and society and the theme of self-realization is re-current e. g. John Proctor in The Crucible. The Crucible was the third play Miller wrote. It is a play about the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. It was used as a parable for McCarthyism in America in the 1950s. Millers play The Crucible has recently been made into a hugely successful film that stars Hollywood actress Winona Ryder showing its enduring themes. The play concentrates on key figures of the trials: Abigail Williams, Mary Warren, John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor and Reverend Samuel Parris. These were all real people trapped in the devastation of the time. The disturbing storyline powerfully depicts people under pressure and certain issues involved, Senator Joseph McCarthy; an important figure in the USA in the 1950s is mentioned somewhat in The Crucible. For instance; a certain similarity between the Salem Witchcraft Trials and McCarthyism was the fact that they both failed to make a plausible case against anyone, both their colourful and cleverly presented accusations drove people out of their jobs (and in The Crucible) and their towns and brought popular condemnation to others. The persecution of innocent souls is apparent in both Senator Joseph McCarthys work and of The Crucible. McCarthyism was when all left wing views were arraigned for un-American activities during the 1950s. The Crucible has much strength, its main and most imminent being its deeper meaning relating to America in the 1950s. The play explores the themes of witchcraft, the struggle between good and evil and a fear of individuality. At the end of Act One Reverend Hale of Beverly, an authorative on witchcraft arrives at Reverend Parriss house. He is trying to awaken Betty from her bed, as she has not woken since Parris caught Betty and some other girls from the wood with Tituba, Parriss Negro slave. The atmosphere is tense due to the fact the scene is taking place in the dark, upstairs room of Bettys bedroom. Its homely state and the close proximity of the characters add suspense and tension. The locals have no explanation for Bettys behaviour other than that she is bewitched. More local disturbances were likely to be blamed on witchcraft, and the hunt for witches began. The community in Salem was all Puritan settlers who had fled from persecution in England and hoped to have found a city of souls. The town was deeply religious as a result of a close relationship between the church and the law, it was, in fact a theocracy. Bettys supposed bewitching would have become very prominent within the village and struck terror into the very core of such a community. Hale begins the scene with suspense. His persona is re-iterated as a brave and fearless man when he alarms the audience with the words, if the Devil is in her you will witness frightful wonders in this room. He scares Mr. Putnam and asks him to stand close in case she flies. Witches were believed to have certain powers that were given to them by their master: the Devil. It was believed that they could make themselves invisible, or change themselves and others into animals, birds or other creatures, and that they could fly. The audience immediately expects a climax to the act, tantalised by the prospect of Hale now casting out the Devil. We watch breathlessly as Hale observes her. Hale is authorative towards Betty and concentrates fully on trying to wake her. Tension increases. .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .postImageUrl , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:hover , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:visited , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:active { border:0!important; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:active , .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8 .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua154a2cffae9f8dd3f0dc768425bbff8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Eva's home EssayParris breaks the atmosphere of suspense, which once again expresses his insecurity of his good name and reputation. This theme is demonstrated throughout the play. How can it be the Devil? Why would he choose my house to strike? His fear of reputation and a despairing plea is reinforced and Hale cleverly answers Parriss queries. This demonstrates Hales strength of belief in the evil plague. It is the best the Devil wants, and who is better than the Minister? The audience immediately is taken aback by Hales quick intelligence. Strangely however, Hales words are nai ve because there are many people within the village who are better than the Minister. Hale uses these words as alleviation. Hale believes it is more of a conquest for the Devil if he uses Parriss house to strike, Parris is somewhat flattered. Hale continues to thoroughly examine Betty and as briefly mentioned before on page thirty-one, The Devil is precise: the marks of his presence are as definite as stone. He asks Betty is someone afflicts her. There is a speculation that Hale is putting ideas into the young girls heads. He questions Betty and enquires, perhaps some bird invisible to others comes to you- perhaps. A little further on in the play, when the girls are being interrogated in court, they declare that a yellow bird- invisible to others, if flying nearby. (Page 74) Holding his hands out, Hale undertones in Latin, the phrase, In nominee Domini Saboath sul filique ite ad infernos. The effect on the audience is awe and the characters are bewildered because of the fact that no-one actually knows what he has just said. Although, as a result of his action this reflects on the character of Hale, and the fact that he has a very scientific and religious approach to an issue which is moral and about the soul. You can therefore relate Hales behaviour to that of Senator Joseph McCarthys in American court cases. Betty does not stir. His attention is drawn to the vigilant Abigail. He is quite severe towards Abigail and his eyes narrow. The atmosphere becomes oppressive. Facts are revealed gradually and Parris admits he saw a kettle in the grass where they were dancing. The concise conversations between Abigail, Hale and Parris become quick and short utterances, due to the severity of the case. Hales questions have become more explicit as he has become more impatiently suspicious. Miller now increases the tension with the speed of the dialogue between Abigail, Hale and Parris. There are very few stage directions required during this particular scene because the action is carried purely through the language. Abigail is clearly thinking on her feet, with hesitant pauses in between words particularly evident. Hale puts more ideas into Abigails head and suggests a frog, a mouse or perhaps something else jumped into the kettle that was found by Parris. Parris fearfully remembers he thought he saw some movement in the soup. Jumping to her defence Abigail screams, that jumped in, we never put it in! She does this because she knows that good evidence to show that something was moving in the kettle could produce a suspicion of witchcraft leant upon her. Jumping to her defences in such a way could make an opposite reaction to what she wants and Hale may think that the way she is carrying out this investigation is very belligerent and aggressive. She would not want to be thought of as that because it could make her look even more suspicious.

Leigh Ann Walker, Staff Accountant free essay sample

1.In your opinion, did Vaughn overreact to Walker’s admission that she had been untruthful regarding the CPA exam? If so, how would you have dealt with the situation if you had been in Vaughn’s position? Vaughn did not over react to Walker’s untruthfulness regarding the CPA exam. She lied that she had not taken it because she feared that she was going to fail. I believe it is important to be completely honest and have integrity while working in an audit firm. If Walker lied about not taking the exam, she easily could have lied about other â€Å"small† things. However, if it was me in Vaughn’s position, I would have also fired Walker. A recently hired accountant to the firm should always be telling the truth no matter what. Members of the firm should have complete honesty with one another and a person who lacks integrity should be no place near an accounting firm. We will write a custom essay sample on Leigh Ann Walker, Staff Accountant or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 2.How would you have dealt with the situation if you had been in Robert’s position? I believe that Robert acted professional. He allowed Walker 60 days to get a new job and even proposed to undisclosed that she was â€Å"counseled out† of the firm. As a managing partner, I believe it is important to keep the employees honest about everything. If I was in Robert’s position I would have done the same. I wouldn’t want to continue to work with a new employee who was caught lying. 3.Vaughn obviously questioned Walker’s personal integrity. Is it possible that one can fulfill the responsibilities of a professional role while lacking personal integrity? Why or why not? It is not possible for one to fulfill the responsibilities of a professional role while lacking personal integrity. Examples like this were the type of people that were involved in the Enron case. The accountants and employees were acting professional but, lacked personal integrity by scheming to falsify financial data. I believe that for one to be professional, a person must have strong integrity so they always do the right thing when no one is watching. 4.Identify two facts from the case that you found particularly interesting (this can be anything- it doesn’t have to be directly accounting-related!) The first fact that I found interesting was that Walker was fired almost immediately after Vaughn found out she was lying about taking the exam. I would have assumed that she would have gotten another strike allowed or even Vaughn would have forgotten about it because she passed the exam. Another fact that I found interesting was that Walker started working at the firm in early 1989. I found it interesting that auditors were this strict about lying even before the Enron scandal. 5.Assume you are working as an auditor in public accounting. Name one lesson that you could learn from this case. The main lesson I learned from this case is to be completely honest about everything. I’m sure that Vaughn would not have been too upset that Walker failed her first attempt at the exam. Like Walker said, â€Å"She realized most of her peers would not pass all sections on their first attempt†. Not all people are â€Å"first timers† and a person should always be honest about their work, especially as a new hire.

Should Religion Be Given more influence in the Education Sys essays

Should Religion Be Given more influence in the Education Sys essays The Constitution was written in 1787 by the founding fathers of the United States. The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments of the Constitution. The very first amendment protects the rights of citizens to worship as they please and the right not to be forced to support someone else's religion (Encarta 1999). They establish basic American civil liberties that the government cannot violate. The reason there should be a separation of church and State is because of the multiple number of religions in America. There are even some who do not even have a religion. If there were more influence of religion in the education systems of America then some children whose parents do not want them to be a certain religion may become confused at what religion to follow. In the case Newdow v. U.S. Congress (2002) the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rules that the addition of the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance back in 1954 was unconstitutional because it violates the separation of church and state (http://atheism.about.com/library/FAQs/blfaq_cs_index.htm.). The debate about the Ten Commandments is very important. Some think that the Ten Commandments should be displayed in public schools. Contrary to what some believe there is not a "standard version" of the Ten Commandments. Catholics, Protestants and Jews all have different versions - different wordings, different numberings and different emphases. How can any one be picked without implicitly denying the validity of the others? Religion should not be given more influence in America's education system because of the beliefs of different people throughout the country. Since there are so many religions in the United States no one would know exactly what religion to influence the children in the schools. Some think that if you incorporate religion into the education of children that they will receive a better education. This is not true. As a young child I was enroll ...

Economics as a collection of analytical tools - concepts of Essay

Economics as a collection of analytical tools - concepts of rationality, opportunity cost, comparative advantage and the margin - Essay Example 87) B. Venkatesh says that "rationality in economics is to do with greed! People are called rational if they desire to improve their economic well-being. That is, they want more wealth, and they want it sooner than later. Thus, if you are offered Rs 1 lakh, and you refuse it, you may be deemed irrational by the economists". (Venkatesh, 1990, p.2) Count the following decision problem. A consumer must choose between 2 actions, videlicet, A and B. She/he acquires 10 dollars from action A and 5 dollars from action B. On the supposition that the consumer prefers more money to less one, he is rational if he chooses action A; a consumer choosing action B is irrational. In the context of this mere example, the rationality concept is trivial, partly because there is no ambiguity in the decision problem (i.e., the set of probable actions and the payback from each action are clear with certainty). Nevertheless, in the context of examples with uncertainty, the concept of rationality is by no means trivial. For instance, consider the following modification to the decision problem stated earlier. If the consumer selects action B, then a fair coin is tossed, and if he is lucky and heads turned up then the consumer gets 15 dollars, and if tails turned up then he gets 5 dollars. In this much more complicated decision problem, it is not clear whether it is as yet rational for the person to choose action A. Opportunity cost is an economical term that means the cost of something in terms of an opportunity foreseen and the benefits that could be obtained from that opportunity, or also understood as the most valuable foreseen alternative. The opportunity cost concept is used in CBA to adjust a dollar value on the inputs necessary to execute policies. The opportunity cost of using an input to execute the policy is its value in the best alternative usage. It assesses the value of what people should forgo to use the input for the policy fulfillment. For instance, if a city wants to construct a hospital on available land it owns, the opportunity cost is another possibility that might have been used with the land and funds for construction instead. Having built the hospital, the city has lost the opportunity to construct a sports centre on that place, or the opportunity to sell that piece of land to decrease the city's debts, and so forth. Simply said, the opportunity cost of spending a Friday night having fun could be the sum of money you could have made if you had spent that time in labor. Opportunity cost is not determined in monetary terms, but in terms of anything that constitutes value for the person or persons carrying out the assessment. The use of the opportunity cost concept seeks for the latent cost of each and every separate economic decision. Incompetence in the economic concept of opportunity cost has induced general economic mistakes, like "the broken window fallacy" reported by Frederic Bastiat. According to Frederic Bastiat, it is not possible to have everything promoted at the expense of everything else. This calls up his well-known definition describing the state, "the great fictitious entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else" (Bastiat, 1975, p.144). A. Smith says "If among a nation of hunters, for

Motivation criticism essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Motivation criticism - Essay Example Howard’s ego for instance allowed him to move on and perform the task of painting the house, a job that Jim Sr. was supposed to do. There is a sense of self-actualization in the part of Howard that there is nothing he could have done to prevent Jim Jr.’s death, it was an accident. He reinforces this belief through sublimation which is a very mature way of dealing with his loss. He do so by talking about his experiences as he narrates it to his client, and how he and his wife are also helping Jim Sr. to cope up with his loss. This allows Howard to vent out his emotions rather than suppressing them. Howard and his wife even suggest Rationalization to help Jim Sr. to cope up with his loss suggesting that there are many ways that could contribute to why Jim Sr. had made lemonade that day even tracing back the cause to the very existence of lemonade so as to remove the blame from his son, to somehow potentially influence his way of thinking. His mother also consciously would like Jim Sr. to distant himself from the familiarity of his surrounding, taking him to Europe to see places in hopes that it will distant Jim from the traumatic memories that the familiarity of their place brings. Mrs. Sear’s Super Ego justifies that it is her duty as a mother to help her son deal with his loss as she and her husband was able to find closure from their loss. Finally, Jim’s id was to endure all the pain and defer all gratification as in the Reality Principle; manipulating—brainwashed himself even that the death of his son is his fault, thus he has to be punished for it. Jim started to regress as evident of no longer doing his usual work, becomes dissociate despite the many attempts of his mom to get him involved in activities like crafting, he displaced himself by suppressing his emotion. There was a continuity of painful emotions because he failed to motivate himself to get over the loss of

Transcendendalist theories and beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau, transcendentalism today Essay Example for Free

Transcendendalist theories and beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau, transcendentalism today Essay In the world of Ralph Waldo Emerson, nothing is more simple than greatness, to be simple is to be great. Emerson believed in simplifying life, he believed that the less possessions a person had the less they had to worry about. He developed a new and creative way of philosophy titled transcendentalism. Transcendentalism dealt with finding joy in nature, simplicity, and individualism. Simplicity is the state of being simple, uncomplicated, or uncompounded. Simplifying life cuts back on stress and worries. Whats the point in owning 50 pairs of shoes, when all that is really needed is 1 good pair that can be worn every day? Simplifying life cuts back on unnecessary items, there fore cutting back on stress. Today people are more materialistic then ever. They need everything and will buy anything. People forget that man makes possessions, possessions dont make the man. To be an individual means to strike off on ones own path. To not follow in the footsteps of others, theres no fun in doing what everybody else does. Transcendentalism urges people to take their destiny by the hand and follow it wherever it should lead them, for they will receive true enlightenment and fulfillment in life. If everybody just did the same thing the world would be a very boring place, everyone was created different for a reason. Emerson and Thoreau lived in a very traditional sort of society, however, the times have changed. Today so much more is accepted people are no longer afraid to be individuals. If a person wants to dye their hair pink, pierce their face 17 times and get 45 tattoos, nobody really cares. Now days people can express their individual personalities without fear. Thoreau felt that a man could only really find himself by looking to nature, and the great outdoors. For a year he actually moved out into the middle of the woods just to be at peace with himself and live off the land. However that would be kind of difficult to do these days unless one already owns the land, and pays taxes. In recent times people still love nature, they love to get away to the great outdoors for a weekend of camping, or fishing, or a day at the beach. In conclusion, transcendentalism is a very unique and different way of thinking. Yet it is still the way human beings naturally act, they love nature, and they are all created as individuals. People, however, are somewhat greedy and materialistic by nature, they have basic needs. This way of thinking is very awe-inspiring and hopefully will not disappear anytime soon.

Compare Dulce et decorum est by Wilfred Owen, and Before Agincourt Essa

Compare Dulce et decorum est by Wilfred Owen, and Before Agincourt by William Shakespeare. Before Agincour and Dulce et decorum est ======================================== I have chosen to compare two poems for this piece of work, and they are Dulce et decorum est by Wilfred Owen, and Before Agincourt by William Shakespeare. Both look at War as the main subject, but express very different views on it. Wilfred Owen has written a very powerful poem about a man dying from a gas attack during the First World War, whereas Shakespeare writes a rhetoric poem about the honour and pride found in battle.  ¡Dulce et decorum est ¡, and  ¡Before Agincourt ¡ are two poems so incredibly far away, in meaning, from each other, that it is very difficult to compare them. The one big difference is their attitude towards war. Wilfred Owen has actually been in a war. He saw what he wrote about. He was there, as the writing is his thoughts and feelings. Shakespeare wasn ´t in the war he wrote about. He wrote about it after it happened, either as a way to boost morale in England at the time of the Spanish Armada for Queen Elizabeth, or because they were his own views on War. This battle did actually happen, but Henry didn ´t say these words, Shakespeare just put them in his mouth. Owen ´s poem is concrete. It happened and was real. He knows what he ´s talking about because he was there and went through it all. Shakespeare ´s poem is airy. It ´s abstract and doesn ´t appear to mean anything. At a first glance its just men talking, but when you read it properly you see that it is far more than that. Henry believes so much in what he ´s saying that he ´s prepared to die for it. It ´s a very spiritual poem, in that it is not earthed, o... ...y using words such as guttering, hoots and gargling. Shakespeare used no similes either, but Owen did, writing Bent double, like old beggars under sacks. In conclusion, I enjoyed Owen ´s poem much more than I did Shakespeare ´s. I felt that Before Agincourt was boring. I didn ´t like the lack of tension, action and drama. I thought that it just went on and on around the same idea, that the language was flowery and too old fashioned for me. Although both poems were repetitive, when Dulce et decorum est repeated words, it really hammered the message home, but when Before Agincourt repeated the same idea, it just bored me. I felt that Owen ´s poem less boring because it was fast paced. It really happened and the images it described were vivid and in your face. So, I would definitely recommend Owen ´s poem to anyone, and I did really enjoy writing about it.

Comparing and Contrasting the Indus River Valley Essay

The Indus River Valley and Tigris and Euphrates River Valley civilizations are important to history, and they have some notable similarities and differences in their â€Å"institutions† of religion and politics that helped shape the development of them. One major institution that helped shape the Indus River Valley Civilization is the Aryans. The Aryans might have destroyed and taken over the Indus River Valley Civilization but they did shape that area. They introduced the Caste System in the area, which is still in use in India today. The Aryans had a polytheistic religion which eventually formed into Hinduism. So, the Aryans not only shaped the Indus River Valley area but also India. The Tigris and Euphrates River Valley Civilizations also had a social system but it didn’t influence anything as much as the Aryan Caste System did. The Tigris and Euphrates River Valley Civilizations had a different â€Å"Institution†. They had a monotheistic religion known as Zoroastrianism. Founded in 600 B.C/B.C.E by Zoroaster, it states that there is a supreme deity called Ahura Mazda, and two other gods, the spirit of good named Spenta Mainyu and the spirit of evil named Angra Mainyu are in a cosmic struggle. In conclusion, the Indus River Valley Civilization and the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley Civilizations had some similarities and differences. Both had a social system, both only the Indus River Valley Civilization had the Aryans, whose polytheistic religion formed into Hinduism. However, the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley Civilizations had Zoroastrianism, a monotheistic religion.
